Please select a class best for you based on time and location. All classes are suitable for novice dancers as well as experienced dancers who are new to Sabrina. Class curriculum and pedagogy is engineered for multi-level students. Most classes are on-going and open to drop in unless otherwise indicated. New Students may start anytime. All classes are taught by Sabrina unless noted otherwise.
Explore various stylizations and interpretations of the Art of Belly Dance as performance art from a Cabaret performance perspective. Many aspects of bellydance performance are reviewed in each class, including hip work, isolations, floor work, drum solo, and props.
Please bring your finger cymbals and veils to each and every class, and please dress accordingly (yoga, gym or dance attire). Also please bring a hip belt with you (this could be a shawl or fringed scarf, or any piece of material you could tie around your hips).
Students who wish to perform in the student showcase are required to take the fundamentals class. You must be an active member of that class to participate in that class group piece. Missed classes and information must be made up at the students initiative and discretion. Consistent attendance is expected.
What Is The Fundamentals of Belly Dance Class
Fundamentals of Belly Dance Class incorporates rhythmic limbering and movement rehearsal, movement vocabulary break-down, belly dance isolations and technique, that will prepare the student to belly dance within the broadest ranges of styles. Students are also introduced and given instruction on the main props used in performance such as finger cymbals and veils. Please bring your own props or ask Sabrina for assistance in acquiring them.
Choreography in Belly Dance Class introduces the experienced student to more sophisticated combinations and professional choreographies, for pieces intended for performances, including student showcases. These dances will be engineered and choreographed for each individual class by Sabrina. All classes will teach to some choreography. All classes will be encouraged to perform these and their own dances at student showcases.
Wear comfortable dance or exercise clothing and plan to dance in bare feet, or soft dance shoes. Fun wear includes skirts or harem pants, cropped half tops and tank tops or decorated bra tops, fringed or coined belts, jewelry and make-up. Bear in mind you won't want to feel hindered while dancing. Please bring your hip belt, veil, and finger cymbals to each class.
Hip Belts: Hip belts are scarves worn low over the hips and buttocks, fashioned with coins and beads, designed to help us feel, hear and delight in the movements and rhythms.
Finger Cymbals: Also known as Zills or Sagats, Finger cymbals are gold or silver metal disks and are played rhythmically while dancing.
Veils: Veils are 3+ yards of polyester chiffon or fine gauge organza and are danced with during slow parts of the belly dance. How to obtain items for class:
